Why this matters

An attractive chart is weak evidence if another reader cannot reconstruct its rules or determine when each label became available.

Explanation

Build an annotation record

A reproducible submission contains fixture ID, sampling unit, cutoff, input list, chosen rules, calculation precision and availability indices. Neighbor-based pivots need completed right-side observations [PIVOT]. Equal-weight means require the stated full window [SMA]. Our assessment uses close-series local maxima, not high-series pivots: that distinction is part of the submission.

Freeze the rules before the reveal

Use a strict one-neighbor close maximum and SMA3 with offset zero. Freeze the upper band at 104 from T1–T3. Evaluate 'all later closes remain at or below 104' only after formation. T4 is above and invalidates that exact statement. This condition is a descriptive audit task, never an execution rule.

Preserve uncertainty at the cutoff

At cutoff T4, its apparent local maximum cannot be confirmed because T5 is hidden. SMA3 at T4 exists, but T5's close does not. Reveal T5 and update the record, without rewriting the T4 report. A later confirmation of T4 at T5 does not turn it into advance knowledge.

Grade limitations, not confident narratives

A complete annotation names lag, sampling and parameter dependence, possible regime change and false-positive interpretations. Invalidate labels when their declared condition or data version changes. No strategy, signal or backtest is submitted. Multiple transformations of the same closes are correlated descriptions, not independent witnesses.

Key terms

  • Cutoff: latest observation permitted in a report.
  • Availability index: first point at which a result is computable.
  • Close pivot: extreme of close series, distinct from bar high/low pivot.
  • Audit trail: preserved rule/input/result versions.

Historical example

ILLUSTRATIVE closes T1–T6:100,104,102,106,101,103. Initial information cutoff T4; later reveal T5/T6. Strict one-neighbor close maxima; SMA3; frozen upper boundary104 from T1–T3. High/low/open/volume absent.

Visual specifications

Evidence panel with cutoff T4 and revealed panel T6; label T2 maximum available T3, T4 maximum available T5; show SMA3 and boundary failure separately. No candles fabricated.

What the evidence proves

Reproducible close annotations and availability under the fixed fixture rules.

What the evidence does not prove

OHLC structure, a predictive signal, independent multi-indicator confirmation or a performance study.

Evidence classifications

  • OBSERVED: FIX-P05-L08 supplies closes through T4 in the initial panel.
  • INFERRED: T4 SMA3=104 under the frozen rule.
  • UNKNOWN: T5 at the initial cutoff.
  • INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE: the annotations establish a profitable edge.

Common mistakes

  • Showing T4 as confirmed at T4.
  • Inventing highs or volumes.
  • Treating correlated indicators as independent evidence.

Practical exercise

Submit a T4-cutoff report with available maxima, SMA3 values and boundary condition. Then append a T6 reveal report. Include availability, source scope and three limitations; explicitly identify one unsupported claim.

Deliver calculations or annotations, claim/source table and limitations. Suggested allocation: study 12 minutes, exercise 8, correction/quiz 10; estimate subject to calibration.

Show worked correction

At T4: T2=104 confirmed as close maximum at T3; T4 unconfirmed. SMA3 T3=102; T4=(104+102+106)/3=104. T4 close106 invalidates the frozen ≤104 condition. After reveal: T4=106 becomes confirmed at T5; SMA3 T5=103, T6=310/3=103.3333. No T6 edge confirmation without T7. Limits include close-only sampling, one-neighbor sensitivity and delayed confirmation. 'This predicts appreciation' is INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE.

Formative rubric (5 points): reproducible inputs, correct method, correct result, claim-specific evidence scope, explicit limitations. Invented observation, advisory output or unsupported safety claim requires correction regardless of score.

Checklist

  • Use exact fixture/cutoff.
  • Preserve availability and rule versions.
  • Separate close-only from OHLC.
  • Report failure and limits without directives.

Summary

A chart assessment succeeds when rules, inputs, cutoffs, availability, failures and unknowns remain inspectable.

Summary

  • Submit an auditable chart annotation with a cutoff.
  • Reject hindsight and unsupported performance claims.
