Why this matters

A larger volume number may reflect a longer bar or a different unit rather than stronger participation.

Explanation

State what is counted

Volume documentation distinguishes asset units such as shares and contracts over a sampling period [VOL]. This lesson uses fictional base-unit counts at one venue. It does not adopt the source's directional trading interpretations. Quote value, base units, transaction count and tick count are different measures.

Define the test first

The original exercise calls participation 'elevated' when completed-bar base volume exceeds twice the mean of three preceding complete equal-duration bars. This arbitrary threshold is a transparent teaching rule, not a recommended indicator. Price above a prior boundary and elevated volume are two descriptive observations.

Normalize sampling

A six-minute count must not be compared directly with three-minute counts. Dividing by duration gives a rough rate, but does not recreate missing per-minute activity. An unfinished bar may appear low simply because less time has elapsed. Cross-venue aggregation also requires consistent identity, units and coverage.

Divergence is a limited comparison

A higher sampled price with a lower like-for-like volume can be called divergence under a defined rule. It does not prove exhaustion, future reversal, genuine interest or who traded. Self-trading and venue outages are alternative explanations requiring independent evidence. Regime and window changes alter the baseline; an apparent confirmation may be a false positive. Invalidate a claim if units, duration or completion status fail the comparability check.

Key terms

  • Base volume: traded quantity in asset units.
  • Rate normalization: quantity divided by interval length.
  • Baseline: declared comparison sample.
  • Divergence: mismatch under a specified joint comparison.

Historical example

ILLUSTRATIVE complete 3-minute baseline A/B/C base volumes 100,120,80; closes 98,99,100. D: complete 3-minute volume 250, close 102. E: complete 6-minute volume 300, close 103. F: incomplete 3-minute bar, elapsed 1 minute, volume 70. No venue identity or transaction evidence exists.

Visual specifications

Aligned close markers and base-volume bars with duration labels; compare D=83.33 units/min with E=50; grey F incomplete. Show no candlestick open/high/low where absent.

What the evidence proves

The fictional D count exceeds the stipulated equal-duration threshold; E's normalized rate is lower than D's.

What the evidence does not prove

Authentic volume, participant identity, future reversal, market-wide liquidity or a directional signal.

Evidence classifications

  • OBSERVED: FIX-P05-L04 stipulates D=250 units over 3 minutes.
  • INFERRED: D passes the original >2× baseline test.
  • UNKNOWN: genuine market participants behind any real analogue.
  • INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE: E's lower rate proves a coming reversal.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing 300 directly to 250 without duration.
  • Treating F as complete.
  • Equating turnover with exit depth.

Practical exercise

Compute baseline mean, D threshold result and D/E per-minute rates. Decide if F can enter the completed-bar baseline. Write a bounded divergence statement and two alternatives to an exhaustion narrative.

Deliver calculations or annotations, claim/source table and limitations. Suggested allocation: study 12 minutes, exercise 8, correction/quiz 10; estimate subject to calibration.

Show worked correction

Mean=(100+120+80)/3=100. Threshold=200; D=250>200. D rate=250/3=83.333, E=300/6=50 units/min, so E is 40% lower despite greater total volume. F is incomplete and excluded. Higher supplied close with lower normalized rate is descriptive divergence; unequal within-bar activity or venue reporting differences remain alternatives. Neither is proven.

Formative rubric (5 points): reproducible inputs, correct method, correct result, claim-specific evidence scope, explicit limitations. Invented observation, advisory output or unsupported safety claim requires correction regardless of score.

Checklist

  • Name unit, venue and interval.
  • Use completed comparable bars.
  • Declare baseline and threshold.
  • Separate counts from causal stories.

Summary

Volume adds a scoped measurement when unit, interval and completion status match; it does not authenticate direction or causation.

Summary

  • Normalize like-for-like volume before comparison.
  • Test a volume hypothesis without inferring direction or identities.
