Why this matters

A pivot drawn at its original bar can hide the later information needed to confirm it. Reproducible annotations record both times.

Explanation

Fix the observation rule

A neighbor-based pivot compares a candidate with bars on both sides [PIVOT]. Our teaching rule uses one completed bar each side and strict inequality. A high must exceed both neighboring highs; a low must be below both neighboring lows. Equal values produce no pivot. First and last bars cannot be confirmed with these inputs.

Label only comparable pivots

HH means a confirmed high above the previous confirmed high; LH means below it. HL and LL compare confirmed lows. The first of each type has no comparative label. A high is not compared with the most recent low. Confirmation at bar t+1 must remain separate from the pivot at t. These are retrospective descriptions, not instructions.

Information changes with sampling

On a larger interval, several local turns may disappear. A two-bar confirmation rule delays availability further and may erase labels produced by the one-bar rule. Unfinished bars can change their extremes; including them silently changes the rule. Preserve interval, completed-bar status, strictness and tie handling.

Invalidation and uncertainty

Recompute if corrected data change a neighbor or the stated sampling window. A run of HH/HL labels describes the chosen record, not the next price. Rapid alternating pivots may be a false positive for a broader trend narrative. Missing bars, regime shifts and another valid parameter choice can produce different descriptions. Never move a confirmation timestamp backwards to create an apparent advance signal.

Key terms

  • Pivot: local extreme under a specified neighbor rule.
  • HH/LH: comparative confirmed highs.
  • HL/LL: comparative confirmed lows.
  • Confirmation delay: future bars required before a label is available.

Historical example

ILLUSTRATIVE one-unit bars T1–T9. Highs: 10,12,11,14,13,12,13,11,12. Lows: 8,9,8.5,10,9,7,8,6,7. No executable market or clock is represented. The paired high/low data support extreme annotations only; open/close values are deliberately absent.

Visual specifications

Annotate supplied high/low interval bars. High pivots T2→T3, T4→T5, T7→T8; low pivots T3→T4, T6→T7, T8→T9. Show initial/HH/LH and initial/LL/LL in separate lanes; no fabricated open/close candles.

What the evidence proves

Strict pivot comparisons within FIX-P05-L01 and their earliest confirmation indices.

What the evidence does not prove

A market trend beyond the fixture, future direction, executable prices or a profitable rule.

Evidence classifications

  • OBSERVED: the supplied fixture lists high T4=14.
  • INFERRED: T4 is HH relative to confirmed T2=12 under the strict rule, available at T5.
  • UNKNOWN: next bar after T9.
  • INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE: a predictive advantage from these nine fictional bars.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing highs with lows.
  • Backdating confirmation.
  • Treating an edge bar as confirmed.

Practical exercise

Identify every confirmed high and low, assign comparative labels and give the earliest availability index. Explain whether T9 can be confirmed and how ties would be handled.

Deliver calculations or annotations, claim/source table and limitations. Suggested allocation: study 12 minutes, exercise 8, correction/quiz 10; estimate subject to calibration.

Show worked correction

High pivots: T2=12 available T3 (initial); T4=14 available T5 (HH); T7=13 available T8 (LH). Low pivots: T3=8.5 available T4 (initial); T6=7 available T7 (LL); T8=6 available T9 (LL). There is no HL here. T9 lacks a right neighbor. Strict ties fail; do not improvise a tie-break after inspection.

Formative rubric (5 points): reproducible inputs, correct method, correct result, claim-specific evidence scope, explicit limitations. Invented observation, advisory output or unsupported safety claim requires correction regardless of score.

Checklist

  • State the interval and neighbor count.
  • Compare same-type confirmed pivots.
  • Keep pivot and confirmation indices.
  • Label missing future data.

Summary

A structural label is reproducible only when its comparison rule and availability time are visible.

Summary

  • Record when a pivot becomes confirmable.
  • Separate a structural label from a forecast.
