Mark swings trend and range without generating a signal

ILLUSTRATIVE · needs_review

Prerequisites: P04-L05

Learning objectives

  • Mark strict one-neighbor swings with a stated confirmation delay.
  • Describe higher/lower extrema and a bounded range without signals.
  • Explain dependence on sampling, tie rules and observation cutoff.

EN source master • P04 — Trading Foundations • needs_review.

Educational boundary: mechanisms and evidence only. No BUY/SELL/HOLD signal, trade recommendation, personalized investment advice, guaranteed setup, price target, expected profit, guaranteed win rate or guaranteed risk/reward outcome. All examples are ILLUSTRATIVE / FICTIONAL; no real money or live trade is required.

Why this matters

Words such as trend, swing and range compress a series into relationships. They become useful only when the labeling rule and cutoff are stated. A reproducible description can identify what happened in a supplied series without presenting that description as a setup, forecast or financial instruction.

Explanation

In this lesson a swing high at indexi is a sampled close strictly above the closes immediately before and after it. A swing low is strictly below both. This is an original one-neighbor rule, not a universal market definition. It uses closes, not intrabar highs/lows. A label becomes confirmed only when the next sample arrives, so the plotted pivot position and the confirmation time differ.

Higher high means a confirmed peak exceeds the prior confirmed peak. Higher low means a confirmed trough exceeds its predecessor. Lower high and lower low reverse those inequalities. Equal values remain equal; do not force them into a directional label. The first and last samples cannot be tested with two neighbors in this bounded dataset.

A descriptive uptrend convention can refer to successively higher peaks and troughs in a stated segment. A downtrend convention can refer to lower peaks and troughs. A range can refer to observed prices contained in a specified band over a specified window. These descriptions are scoped to the selected samples, rule and window. They do not assert a future continuation or reversal.

Aggregation changes the extrema available to a classifier. A coarser series may omit intermediate swings. Another method using two neighbors, intrabar extremes or a volatility threshold could label differently without using the same definition incorrectly. Record the method before examining the result; otherwise it becomes easy to adjust the rule until a desired story appears.

Confirmation is essential to prevent hindsight leakage. At sample 5 the price 107 is known, but it cannot yet be a confirmed one-neighbor high because sample 6 is missing. Marking it as confirmed at 5 imports later knowledge. “Future sample needed” is an epistemic state, not a reason to assume that future sample will qualify.

Trend and range labels are descriptive methods, not physical forces. A price returning to a band edge does not prove another return will follow. The dataset has no causal intervention, independent forecast test or prospective uncertainty model. Do not convert its swing labels into BUY/SELL/HOLD instructions.

Source-to-claim scope

  • Chart/trend vocabulary only [S04-STRUCTURE].
  • Price summaries depend on their chart input basis [S04-CHARTS].

The fixture's arithmetic, bucket alignment, strict swing rule, matching/trigger assumptions, journal convention and rubric are explicitly supplied teaching conventions where applicable; these references do not authenticate fictional values or endorse a venue. US securities and futures sources support bounded vocabulary and limitations, not a claim that their rules apply universally to crypto.

Key terms

  • Swing: local extremum under an explicitly defined neighborhood.
  • Confirmation delay: additional data needed before a label is available.
  • HH / HL: higher confirmed high / low relative to a prior comparable pivot.
  • LH / LL: lower confirmed high / low.
  • Range: observed containment within a specified band and window.
  • Method dependence: classification changes when sampling or rules change.

Historical example

Data status: ILLUSTRATIVE / FICTIONAL. Each index is an equally spaced synthetic sample; values are sampled closes in CU/FU. No trade execution or current asset is represented.

IndexCloseConfirmed label after next sample
0100Endpoint: unavailable left neighbor
1104High, known at 2
2102Low, known at 3
3106High, known at 4
4103Low, known at 5
5107High, known at 6
6104Neither
7102Low, known at 8
8103High, known at 9
9101Low, known at 10
10102High, known at 11
11100Low, known at 12
12101Endpoint: right neighbor unknown

Peaks 104→106→107 are higher. Troughs 102→103 are higher over the early confirmed segment. Later peaks 107→103→102 are lower; later troughs 103→102→101→100 are lower. Index 6 is not a trough:104 is below 107 but above its next neighbor 102. The description changes across segments; do not claim one label captures every sample.

Separate range seriesR0–R4=[99,101,99,101,99]. Every supplied close is inside[99,101]. This proves observed containment only. It supplies no R5 and no intrabar extremes. Equal peaks 101 do not form a higher-high sequence, and equal lows 99 are not lower lows.

What the evidence proves

StateClaim and locatorLimit
OBSERVEDThe supplied sampled closesNo intrabar extrema or later data
INFERREDPivots and relative comparisons under the strict ruleRule- and segment-dependent
UNKNOWNIndex 13, range sampleR5 and causal explanationsOutside the dataset
INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCEA higher-high sequence guarantees continuation or an observed range guarantees another bounceNo prospective evidence

The chart supports a bounded descriptive annotation. It cannot prove an executable trade, participant intent, an optimal window or a future price. The final 101 at 12 could later qualify as a high or fail to qualify, depending on the unknown next value.

Common mistakes

Labeling a pivot when only its left neighbor exists; silently changing from close-based to wick-based swings; calling any fall a confirmed swing low; forcing equality into HH/LL; and plotting hindsight labels as if known immediately overstate the evidence.

Practical exercise

Inputs: full close series and range series. Tasks: apply the strict rule to each eligible index; list confirmation indices; classify relative peak/trough changes; report the latest confirmed labels available at cutoff 5; describe the range and its limitations.

Show worked correction

Expected reasoning: Compare both neighbors, preserve strict inequalities, and exclude later samples from an earlier-cutoff answer.

Complete correction: High indices 1,3,5,8,10; low indices 2,4,7,9,11. Each is confirmed ati+1. At cutoff 5, confirmed peaks are 104 at 1 and 106 at 3; confirmed lows 102 at 2 and 103 at 4. The 107 at 5 is observed but not yet a confirmed peak. Index 6 is neither by the two-neighbor test. RangeR stays within 99–101 for its five provided closes; future containment and intrabar containment are UNKNOWN. The higher/lower sequences above describe their respective confirmed segments. They are not instructions to trade. If an alternate two-neighbor method is requested, the existing labels cannot simply be reused: recompute and document the changed data requirement.

Checklist

Fix input basis and pivot rule; state ties and endpoints; record confirmation time; name segment; compare like extrema; identify unobserved future data; and separate classification from prediction.

Summary

Market structure vocabulary is reproducible when definitions and cutoffs are explicit. Its precision is descriptive. No pattern in this fixture provides a guaranteed signal or outcome.
